A milestone has been achieved for the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct, with works commencing on the Interim Emergency Department in mid 2020.

A new Emergency Department is included in the redevelopment of the John Hunter and John Hunter Children's Hospital, however the interim works have been brought forward to allow the existing Emergency Department more options and treatment spaces for managing the expected surge with winter and COVID-19 response.

These works will provide an additional 12 treatment spaces to the existing 30 as well as an additional procedure room. They will repurpose the existing administration area and provide a dedicated paediatric treatment zone.

Hunter New England Hunter New England Chief Executive, Michael DiRienzo said he is eager for the works to commence. “One of the key benefits to these works being brought forward is that they are able to be completed without any operational impact to the existing Emergency Department”, he said.

Once completed, the additional area will be used to treat paediatric patients while allowing the existing Emergency Department more options and treatment spaces for managing COVID-19 patients.

These works are expected to be completed in approximately two months.
