An important part of the redevelopment is the upgrades and modifications to roads around the precinct.
One road runs along the western boundary of the campus extending from a new roundabout outside Pathology (that is open now), past Forensic Medicine and along the west of Carpark 4 to another new roundabout that will eventually connect up to the Rankin Park to Jesmond section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass (once it’s complete).
Another new road then leads drivers along the northern boundary of the campus to Carpark 5 (next to HMRI) via a boom gate that will use existing access cards.
When these new roads are opened on October 10, Gumtree Close will be permanently closed to drivers. Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain unchanged.
All drivers using the new roundabout outside Pathology will be directed along Kookaburra Circuit at the rear of the hospital to exit the campus.
New signage will be in place to guide drivers.

Looking ahead
Once the bypass is opened, drivers will be able to access Carpark 4 and Carpark 1 via new boom gates.
The road highlighted in light blue in the top right of the image above will be opened when the new Acute Services Building is complete.
