New lift progressing

Work has begun on a new entry to the hospital.  We are building a second lift and the start of a covered walkway that will lead visitors from the carpark to the new hospital entrance (see the image below). The current lift is still available. However, the stairs leading from the pedestrian crossing down to the main carpark (1 and 2) are no longer accessible. Visitors should follow the signs to the nearby walkways. Stage 1 of these works is scheduled for completion in September 2024.

Carpark concrete complete

Despite heavy rain throughout May, the team has completed concrete pours for the four basement levels in the new acute services building. These levels will be used for carparking, with an additional 900 spaces available for staff and the community.

The redevelopment includes some existing roads being altered, and some completely new roads being built to connect to the bypass. Some parking areas are being temporarily changed, but there will never be a decrease in the overall parking available. Stay across the varied changes and timelines of the development via our interactive map.

Testing everything including the sinks

For almost five years, staff from all disciplines have played a vital role in ensuring the new building will be fit for purpose.

The team has met every week since late 2022 to review samples of materials that will be in the new hospital. This can range from anything from the façade cladding, types of glass and carpet, right down to the hinges on doors. Everything you will see in the new hospital will be reviewed by this team prior, with representatives from Infection Control, Work Health and Safety, Engineering and Mental Health.

Samples are put through their paces and in some cases, installed in the prototype rooms for more rigorous user testing. The image below shows a range of sinks that have recently been tested against a whole range of things including water flow, drainage, and accessibility for people in wheelchairs.
